Do you have any tips on keeping costs down when purchasing airfare?

Feb. 17, 2010 - Even though airfare has gone down to more reasonable rates from just a few months ago for some flights, many of them still have additional expenses that were unheard of before. These extra charges can really add up.

Some airlines charge for luggage bags, drinks, seating arrangements, and more.  One consideration is to check into the expense of mailing most of your luggage to your new destination compared to the price of sending it on the airplane.  Try to keep your airplane luggage limited to a carry on with your essentials and important paperwork.

Also, you often get better deals if you book your flights online.  Try searching popular Web sites such as Fly.comOrbitz and Kayak. Your recruiter may even have some other suggestions of sites to try.

Personally, I usually bring an empty water bottle with me in my luggage and then when I get inside airport and past the check point, I fill up at the water fountain and I am ready to go with water for my flight.  Some flights even charge for blankets now so you may want to bring a small one.

Make sure you call the airlines before you go and find out the items they charge for so you can make a plan to get past the hidden fees.
